The Tumour Bank of the CHU of Bordeaux

Following the DHOS (Directorate of Hospitalisation and Care Management) project call of 2001-2002, the CHU (University Hospital Centre) of Bordeaux obtained a financial support to create a cryo-preservation unit to collect cancer cells and tissues as well as derivative products for medical and research purposes in favour of the patients hospitalised at the CHU of Bordeaux. The sample collection is carried out following standardised procedures (information delivered to the patient and possibility of opposition) as recommended by ANAES (National Agency for Health Accreditation and Evaluation) (2001).
The Tumour Bank groups together the cryo-preservation services of three laboratories (two of Pathology and one of Haematology) in a single site at the Haut-Lévêque Hospital, Pessac. A secure building of about 125m2 houses these biopsies in -140°C (n=3) or -80°C (n=3) freezers since 2004. From 2006, we receive also biopsies for medical purposes from the Regional Tumour Bank, which was established within the Aquitaine Cancer Network and relies on our tumour bank (Pr J.P. Merlio), and from the repository of the Bergonié Institute (Pr J.M. Coindre). These biopsies are generally not annotated and not available for research purposes with the exception of specific clinical research protocols.
Specimens are processed, validated (tissue blocks are embedded in duplicate) and snap-frozen by the Anatomo-Pathology (Pr P. Bioulac-Sage and Pr A. de Mascarel) and Specialised Haematology Units (Pr V. Praloran) of the CHU of Bordeaux. The processed samples are recorded in the Diamic database (which is used by all three laboratories) together with the anatomo-pathological reports that are then integrated with the clinical information (DX Care Patient record). The specimens of the tumour bank, their annotations and derivative products are managed using the Tumorotek software developed by DHOS in order to allow an anonymous organisation and access to human bio-specimens according to the current regulations. The tumour bank is physically incorporated into the laboratory of Cancer Biology and Cytogenetics of the CHU of Bordeaux. This centralised facility for cancer genetics, which has been financially supported also by INCa (National Institute of Cancer) to cover for equipment in 2006 and for personnel costs in 2007, allows us to dispose of shared technical resources (Pr JP Merlio et Pr FX Mahon) to perform the biological analyses needed for the diagnosis and treatment of sporadic cancers. Thanks to the financial support from the CHU of Bordeaux, the Ligue Contre le Cancer (French Cancer Charity) and the Cancéropôle Grand Sud-Ouest, we dispose now of dedicated technical and humans resources to handle tumour samples for storage, extract nucleic acids, perform quality control and medical analysis and finally process requests of access to biological samples for clinical research (except in case of opposition and following the opinion of a Steering Committee that includes a clinician, a pathologist, the tumour bank manager and a representative of the clinical research directorate). A development towards a Centre of Biological Resources that will allow the collection of sera and non tumour cells is in progress.

Brain tumours
Blood diseases (leukaemia, lymphomas, ...) including blood or bone marrow cells
Urological tumours (kidney, bladder)
Lung tumours
Digestive tract and pancreatic tumours
Skin cancers (lymphomas, rare tumours)


For requests of specimens or derivative products (to be favoured), please, send a research project summary to the Tumour Bank of Bordeaux to allow the Steering Committee to evaluate the technical and ethical suitability of the samples and the availability of the clinical annotations required for the research project, if relevant. A collaborative contract will be established according to the INCa model to optimise the access to biopsies and data needed for each research project.
