The Tumour Bank of the Cancer Centre - Bergonié Institute


The tumour bank of the Cancer Centre – Bergonié Institute, Bordeaux, was created in 1989 by swiftly organising dedicated premises housing three - 140°C freezers, electronic security and computerised data collection. In addition, recommendations were given about which types of tumours to collect and how they should be cryo-preserved. In 2001, following a call from the Directorate of Hospitalisation and Care Management (DHOS), a financial support was attributed for running and staff costs as well as for the expansion to derivative products (i.e., DNA and RNA).

The patients followed at the Bergonié Institute are systematically informed about the possibility that a fragment of their biopsy may be cryo-preserved and they can refuse the authorisation to use their tissues for scientific research. This information is indicated in the patient’s medical record. The Clinical Research Committee of the Bergonié Institute, which includes representatives of different medical and research departments, reviews all important decisions concerning the tumour bank and, particularly, all requests of external collaborations that entail the use of bio-specimens stored in the tumour bank. 
This tumour bank includes specimens coming mainly from:
      Breast tumours
      Lymphoid tumours
      Connective tissue tumours
      Digestive tract tumours
      Gynaecological tumours
      Samples of blood cells of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (cell bank)

All tumours surgically removed at the Centre are immediately transmitted to and handled fresh by a pathologist who takes a sample for the tumour bank and a duplicate to be fixed and included in a paraffin block. The latter allows the evaluation of the percentage of cancer cells in the fragment for the bank. The average time between the surgical removal and the freezing is of about 20 min.
The participation to several collaborative works showed that DNA extracted from our samples could be used for CGH array in100 % of the cases and that RNA could be used for expression profiling in about 80 % of the cases.
The computerised information system put in place aims at creating a mutual enrichment for the different applications (i.e., anatomo-pathology, tumour bank, management of the DNA/RNA bank and molecular biology service).
Indeed, the computerised management system of the Department of Pathology comprises several complementary modules including the Tumour Bank, the RNA/DNA Bank, the Molecular Biology Service as well as, of course, the Anatomo-Pathology Unit and shortly also the standardised reports. This management system is directly linked to the computerised medical record system and we have also databases dedicated to tumours at specific anatomical localisations, such breast cancers, sarcomas, lymphomas and cancers of the digestive tract. These databases include clinical, anatomo-pathological, therapeutic, and disease progression data of the patients followed at the Bergonié Institute. They can be compared with the file of the Pathology Department to obtain a tumour bank annotated file.
